Simon Valverde is a widely recognized lawyer in the intellectual property field in Costa Rica. During his career, he has played key roles and contributed significantly to this practice area.
He worked at the Vice Dean’s Research Office at the University of Costa Rica, where he oversaw matters related to intellectual property, technology, and knowledge transfer. He is a founding member and former director of the Costa Rican Association of Intellectual Property Professionals (APPICR).
He has prosecuted numerous patent applications, participating in hundreds of interviews with patent examiners, being the professional who has attended these on the most occasions.
He successfully litigated in the judicial courts (Administrative Contentious Court) together with attorney Luis Diego Castro the cases that set forth the current standard for the review of patent applications by examiners and promoted the mandatory use of the Central American Manual for the Examination of Patents. Patents.
On behalf of APPICR, he organized and coordinated two seminars on patent examination guidelines and pharmaceutical patent examination. He advised the Costa Rica Patent Office in the drafting of the regulations for the Costa Rican Patent Law (Regulations to the Patent Law No. 6867). He also provides advice on issues related to trademarks, trade secrets and copyright to multinational companies, including some of the Fortune 500, as well as public institutions and individuals.
Since 2011 he has worked as a teacher at various universities in the country, having been part of the redesign of the master’s degree in Intellectual Property at the Universidad Estatal a Distancia de Costa Rica, the only master’s degree program of its kind in Central America. He is a frequent guest at conferences and has published multiple articles in national and international media.
He was a partner at Castro y Pal Abogados, and later a partner at Arias.
Qualifications:
- Law Degree at the University of Costa Rica.
- Postgraduate studies in Notarial Law from the Autonomous University of Central America.
- Master of Laws LL.M. from the University of New Hampshire (Franklin Pierce Law Center).
