Professional Background

Carlos Corrales launched his IP career in 1993 as a paralegal, building a deep foundation in the practical aspects of intellectual property management from the ground up. He earned his law degree from the University of Costa Rica in 1997, followed by advanced studies at the Franklin Pierce School of Law at the University of New Hampshire, where he obtained his LL.M. in Intellectual Property.

His government service includes work as an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Trade, where he participated in negotiations of free trade agreements. This experience provided him with firsthand insight into the intersection of international trade policy and intellectual property protection, equipping him to counsel clients on the implications of trade agreements for their IP portfolios.

Carlos co-founded the Association of Intellectual Property Professionals in Costa Rica (APPICR), serving as president from 2010 to 2012. Through this leadership role, he played a key part in professionalizing the IP practice community in Costa Rica and advocating for stronger intellectual property frameworks in the country.

He has also served as an instructor in the master’s program in Intellectual Property at UNED and other institutions, sharing his extensive knowledge with the next generation of IP professionals. His commitment to education reflects his belief in building a stronger IP ecosystem across the region.
